Product Description
Standing. Seated. Reclining. Kneeling. Bending. Crouching. Running. World-renowned photographer Mark Edward Smith has captured women of every age and form in every type of movement, then gathered his striking, unusual images into The Nude Female Figure. An indispensable reference for artists who have limited access to live figure models, this remarkable book features striking images of shapely young women as well as elegiac photos of more mature women. The models in these full-color pictures include women of every type--slender women, not-so-slender women, pregnant women, and women of color. A special section shows close-ups of the hands and feet. Each pose is beautiful, and the unparalleled attention to composition, lighting, and reproduction make it easy for artists to see the relationships between the parts of the body and to study the classic female figure.

nice resource August 7, 2010 T (CA United States) i've had this book for about 6 months, and have used several of the pictures to draw and paint from. it has lovely pictures of a wide range of lovely women, and i think that the photographer did a good job capturing a range of moods and textures.
i agree with another reviewer that some pictures with a single light source would be nice. there are a lot of action and unconventional poses, but it would also be nice to have some more classical poses.
i think that the main reason that i'm not that overwhelmed is because figure drawing/painting from a book is so much less inspiring than in person. which isn't anything that the photographer could have done, but i've just ended up using this book less than i'd imagined i would.
overall, it's a nice resource for practice but it's not what i would call inspiring.
A great book, but make sure it is what you are looking for! April 28, 2009 David Jimenez (College Station, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The first piece of advice I can give you when you are considering to buy this book is that by 'artist', Mr. Smith is not talking about photographers. I bought this book mostly thinking about a guide for posing the few ladies who allow me to use them as my photography subject. Nevertheless, I think it is not too useful in that sense. The poses are not necessarily the more elegant or stylish you can find, and you can think on your own of a few better way to pose your model.
On the other hand, if what you're looking for is a reference for drawing or sculpting, this is probably your book (specially for the former). It shows you women from all sizes, and most larger ethnic groups you can find, in many different poses, just asking for you to take a pencil and a piece of paper and start drawing.
add another to the library September 9, 2008 Lady Corsetra, costumer 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have the Author's previous book and when I saw his new one I had to have it.
I love that a few of the models are more "real sized" as most books tend to only have athletic or thin shaped women.
I love the pregnant figgure section as always.
The hands and feet are a real treat.

I had a need for a reference of body structure. The book I selected was exactly what I needed. I will keep this book forever and will be able to use it many times. I was very satisfied with this book.
Very Disappointing May 10, 2008 Randy M. Cain (Texas, USA) 6 out of 19 found this review helpful
This book is a very poor implementation of a good idea. As an artists' visual reference, this book is a waste of time and money.
The quality of the book is very poor. The binding won't allow the book to lay flat. There was debris on many of the plates when the photographs were printed. There are ink smudges on pages. The the ink rubs off of photographs, so even a gentle touch when taking measurements for drawing, can damage the photographs.
The photography is poor quality. Most of the photographs are grainy, dark backgrounds, lack detail. The lighting wasn't in the normal 10 o'clock position, but from strange angles, casting odd shadows, obscuring important details. Several photographs suffer motion blur.
The poses are stiff and unnatural. None of the poses are from different camera angles for full, half, three-quarter drawing.
Some of the models should have taken a shower and a shave before being photographed. Many of the models have dirty feet, dirty fingernails, dry/bad skin, ugly blemishes and scars. One model is unhealthily thin. A few of the models have bunyons, malformed toes, very unattractive extremities. Several of the models had their faces covered with their hands, or unnaturally positioned head/hair. All of the models look extremely insecure and uncomfortable.
This book seems to be nothing more than a cheesy, "Look how many ladies I talked into posing naked, (and how many suckers I conned into buying this useless book)." My money would have been better spent hiring a model and taking my own photographs!
