Patrick Dempsey makes his full transition to romantic-comedy stardom in Made of Honor, flashing those winning dimples and twinkly baby blues to full fetching effect. The camera truly loves him, and his considerable affable charm calls to mind early Hugh Grant, winsome even in utter confusion. Dempsey plays Tom, a nice guy but a serial dater with a girlfriend in every zip code of New York; Michelle Monaghan is Hannah, Tom's BFF since college, who's decided she wants marriage and family. When she becomes unexpectedly engaged to Colin (Journeyman's Kevin McKidd, rather McDreamy himself), Tom realizes what the viewer's known all along--that Hannah is in fact his dream woman. It's When Harry Met Sally... meets My Best Friend's Wedding--but thankfully, Dempsey's Tom is far more sympathetic than Julia Roberts' snide schemer. The plot isn't exactly full of surprises, but the cast--and their amazing chemistry--are so winning that the film makes for the perfect date movie. Not only are all three leads charming in their own way, but the rich cinematography manages to make both Manhattan and the Scottish countryside look like glorious edens, one urban, one windswept. Monaghan is a revelation, quietly lovely as a young Carla Bruni, but with a flinty gumption that makes her all the more appealing. The supporting cast is rich, too, especially Sydney Pollack as Tom's serially marrying dad. (At his dad's fifth--or is it sixth?--wedding, Tom's new arm-candy "stepmom" gets tipsy and overly affectionate with guests as her new husband looks on fondly: "Ah... drunk as the night I first met her.") But at the core of the film are its big heart, and the connection between Tom and Hannah, deep and wide whether they end up just best friends or more. And the delight for viewers is knowing they'll be just as glowy either way.-- A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.   August 29, 2010
SaraShaw (Boston, Massachusetts)
Ultimately, all romantic comedys are going to be formula. That is not a valid criticism anymore as so many of these type of movies have been done. They are all going to tread on parts of another. The question is, is it a good movie, is the acting decent. Does it annoy you? Made of Honor didn't annoy me and was not unreasonably formulaic.

Tom, Patrick Dempsey, meets Hanna, Michelle Monaghan, one late night at college when he is drunk. He goes for a hook up with her roommate and gets into bed with Hanna. After much screaming and freaking out, they go down to the lobby and have a wonderful conversation. I think it is obvious that Tom falls for her that night, and she him too... but they both drop hints as to why they don't want to enter a relationship. His reputation ladies man already proceeds him and she isn't his typical loose hot girl - she is a serious art history major. He has an idea for a coffee cup holder (eventually adopted by Starbucks) and clearly they are friends for life after their first meeting.

Fast forward 10 years and Tom is wealthy (invented those coffee cup holders) and Hanna works at a museum in New York. They are best friends and Tom is still a ladies man, but every Sunday he and Hanna do stuff. It is obvious they are BFFs. Hanna routinely goes to his dad's (a serial marrier) weddings with him and unlike most romantic comedys - they genuinely enjoy each other. No bickering - I hate you- no I love you - here. It seems they have never been apart for long. At one of the marriage parties, Toms ladies man veneer begins to crack and Hanna comes close to moving them closer, but Tom pulls back. Hanna almost shrugs her shoulders like she hoped but accepts where he is right now.

Hanna goes to Scotland for work for six weeks. During this time Tom realizes how much he needs Hanna and how little his other women really mean to him. He has probably been coming to this conclusion for a while, the 6 week thing just pushes him over the edge. But Hanna returns engaged to a pretty decent guy and Hanna asks Tom to be her maid of honor. He accepts hoping he can point out to her that she loves him and he is ready to commit.

Ok, that whole maid of honor thing was the "marketing hook" that thankfully wasn't brought up that much. And once Hanna gets engaged the movie starts dragging with silly make fun of Scotland scenes. However, those were thankfully brief and Tom's way of letting Hanna in on his change of heart was a little different then most movies. No talking was involved and gave Hanna the opportunity to know that he loved her and think about it - and make the choice. I hate when movies end with... "marry me" and the girl makes the decision on the spot. That isn't a recipe for disaster!

Hanna was a strong female character without being a pill and Tom, although a ladies guy, is very likable. All in all a pretty good movie. If you like romantic comedies this will be a good 1 hour and 45 minutes.

very good product. 13 items bought at the same time, combined shipping was not considered. shipping for 13 dvd's was $35.00 which is outrageous. there shipping cost was $8.00 ........ should improve the combined shipping policy........ would buy more items from you if shipping was not so un-reasonable.

3 out of 5 stars Neither here nor there   May 29, 2010

I didn't love this movie, but I didn't dislike it. It was "Okay" I probably, however, will never watch it again. Patrick Dempsey gets a 8 of out 10 in his role as Tom, so his part in it is pretty decent which is good because he is the lead role. Michelle Monaghan as Hannah, however, was a little bland. I'd give her a 4 of out 10 and actually was thinking if they had gone with a different female in the role it might have been better. I must agree however with other reviewers that the Scotland scenes were rather visually pleasing. The concept of two best friends a male and a female, has been done before. But the idea of the guy being a Maid of Honor is kind of interesting. It was not carried out in the best way though. However, if you have about an hour and a half of free time and it is on television on like HBO or something then, yeah, I'd say it's a "decent" way to pass the time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Date Movie   April 23, 2010

This movie is so sweet. It isn't exactly a "chick flick" so the fellas may enjoy it too. Its about best friends falling for each other. Is there any better way to fall in love? The reverse of My Best Friend's Wedding, Made of Honor will make you laugh and wish for a romance of the same proportions!
